City Investing in Neighborhoods but Not Lake City

The Mayor's Office just announced a $1.1 million dollar investments in neighborhoods but Lake City is not on the list (http://mayormcginn.seattle.gov/announcing-1-1-million-investment-in-neighborhood-business-districts/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=announcing-1-1-million-investment-in-neighborhood-business-districts).  This should be a wake up call to Lake City residents and businesses that it is time for change.  We need to ask ourselves what we are doing wrong as a community and why the City is not investing in Lake City as important neighborhood. There has been a lot of talk about a Business Improvement Area (BIA)  for Lake City but nothing seems to be moving on this front and we have a great opportunity for potential change with the investment that Pierre Properties want to make in our community - stay tuned for more details - but we need residents to participate in the process and become involved in the community.  Let's not let another opportunity for funds to be invested in our neighborhood pass us by.

Contacting the mayor
I agree that we need to make our voices heard. I submitted an email to the mayor's office about the lack of support Lake City seems to be getting. It's pretty simple to do - just go to www.seattle.gov/mayor/press/ and click on the contact us tab to send a message to the mayor.

RE: Contacting the mayor & police chief
Here's more contact info for the mayor and the Seattle Police chief. If more of us at least email and call them with concerns and ideas, less of a chance we'll be ignored up here!
Email Mayor McGinn at mike.mcginn@seattle.gov ... or leave voicemails for John Diaz, the Police Chief, at 206-684-5577.

Why were we missed?
Yes, LC residents need to be more proactive, but when there's not a culture of that in the neighborhood, how do you create/teach it? Seems that a grant from the city thru this program could have helped LC to perhaps engage residents more.
Was there some "application" for this that we missed out on?
The mayor has been here a few times of late -- and we're not on the city's radar? We're one of the neighborhoods that really, really needs help -- so disappointing that we were completely left out.

Another thought...
I wonder what we can learn from White Center? They're on the list and they've been getting a lot of attention/new businesses lately. Do they have a strong community group, and how was that created/grown/strengthened?

Grants for next year
Apparhently there are grants which I was not aware of. We will add this to the list of items that the Lake City Community Council should take a look at and work with the Lake City Chamber on for next year.

We need to get more organized
The only way Lake City will get any positive attention from the City is if we as a community work together to get attention and support. But everyone is busy raising kids, working, maintaining their homes, caring for elderly parents. We as a group will have to get fed up and invest some of our time and energy to create change.

Agree!
Absolutely agree rlander with your statement on being busy but investing our time and energy to create change. We have the Lake City Community Council but there are only 4 of us serving on the Steering Committee right now and attendance for the meetings is low. We would love some new energy that comes with new volunteers and are totally open to finding ways to accomodate busy schedules, kids, jobs, etc.

RE: Getting involved
The Only in Seattle Initiative is the City’s neighborhood business district program that works in partnership with local business district organizations. Only in Seattle is administered by the Office of Economic Development (OED) and promotes a healthy business environment for business organizations and neighborhood business districts.

You can read more on the OED website here: http://www.seattle.gov/economicdevelopment/support_funding.h about the proven strategies for creating vibrant business districts that serve as pillars of the program: business and retail development, marketing and promotion, clean and safe, streetscape and appearance, and business organization development.
Every year, OED issues a request for proposals (RFP) from business districts, and issued one in November 2011 for Only in Seattle work in 2012. Many neighborhood business districts submitted proposals. 19 neighborhoods were selected and received funding, which was announced on February 28, 2012. OED’s Tina Vlasaty spoke at the Lake City Chamber of Commerce’s October, 2011 luncheon and promoted the Only in Seattle RFP as a funding opportunity. Unfortunately, Lake City did not submit a proposal for Only in Seattle funding.

The next RFP will be issued in fall of 2012, for work in 2013. OED invites the Lake City Chamber and community groups to work together to craft a proposal for the investments they would like to see in Lake City. For more information about Only in Seattle, please visit www.seattle.gov/economicdevelopment or contact Theresa Barreras at 206-684-4505 or theresa.barreras@seattle.gov
